NEWSLETTER 2009- 2010

All year 6 girls gained a place at their Secondary School of choice with 100% pass rate for JCG.

In the Autumn Term, Years 4, 5 and 6 went on an environmental outing to local areas surrounding St Helier. All girls were given the chance to write their own poetry based on the photographs that had been taken around Jersey. The book ‘VISIONS’ was published and four girls were lucky enough to be chosen to have their work published.

In the Music Eisteddfod, the Year 2 choir won the Donaldson Shield and the Years 3 and 4 Drama Group won the Messervy- Le Sueur Cup for one act plays. At the Arts and Crafts Eisteddfod in the Spring Term many girls won certificates for Art and Craft and for Handwriting. Congratulations to Sejal Kumar in Year 2 who won the Amyson Trophy for Best Younger Entrant for Handwriting.

The Year 6 Swimarathon Team were a fantastic group. They swam really well and raised a considerable amount for charity. Well done to them and thanks to Mrs Bennett for her support.

Open Day was a very busy evening in March with lots of people attending and many potential parents came along to find out more about Helvetia. My thanks go to the teachers for all the super work that they put into their displays and to the PTA for providing the refreshments and other stalls.

The house dance competition for Key Stage 2 was a wonderful afternoon as it was so entertaining. All the girls did themselves proud and I look forward to next year. The newly introduced House Days were really successful. The girls took part in team building activities and learnt about their particular ‘famous lady’.

During the Summer Term, Helvetia entered the ‘Design an Ad’ competition and many of the girls’ ideas were published in the JEP. Congratulations go to Florence Gardner-Hillman (Year 6) who won the award of ‘Highly Commended in the Junior Section – second place’ and was in the top five of the entrants.

Less competitive but great fun to take part in, our Summer Show of Performing Arts at Hautlieu seems to have been a huge success. The venue was fantastic and the girls behaved very well.

Also in the Summer Term, The ‘Phyllis Haines’ Public Speaking Competition was held in July and all Year 6 girls gave their own speech about their chosen topic. Year 5 girls introduced and thanked each ‘speaker’.

Each year group in the School grew potatoes in buckets and they were harvested in June in front of the judges. Year 6 girls had the most potatoes in terms of number and weight. They were eaten with much enthusiasm by the whole school and Year 1 designed their own Mr and Mrs Potato Heads including ‘The Royal Family’. Pre-Prep grew carrots and were part of the exhibition in the West Show and also took part in the growing vegetables and fruit in a Supermarket trolley re-cycling venture that the Parish of St. Helier organised this summer.

Year 6 Girls were invited to take part in the first Junior Science Fayre held at Beaulieu School in June. Five Primary schools took part and Helvetia came second place overall. We won the individual first and second prizes and second place in the individual effort awards.

The Primary Schools Sports Festival took place at Fort Regent in early July. Twelve schools competed in various activities such as basketball and kick boxing. Helvetia came third overall – a fantastic achievement as their team was made up of very few girls compared with other schools. The relay team in the Primary Schools Athletics Competition came third and there were a number of outstanding individual performances.

Helvetia still has plenty of talent so there was great excitement at People’s Park at the end of June when the School’s annual Sports Day took place. Never missing an opportunity to raise funds, our hard working PTA sold delicious ‘Cream Teas’ and many of us allowed ourselves to enjoy such a treat!

Various outings have taken place this year including a visit to the Royal Square to find out more about the Battle of Jersey and a trip to Mont Orgueil Castle. Years 5 and 6 went to the Met Office to support their learning in I.T. and their activity week consisted of surfing, Creepy Valley and the Maze, all of which were a tremendous success. There was a bus trip to the Zoo for Pre-Prep and Year 1 and a visit to the Post Office for Year 2.

Key Stage 2 girls really enjoyed the Horrible Science show at the Opera House in May and Years 2 and 3 were invited to sing at St. Helier House care home. Pre-Prep went on a trip to see lambs and flamingos as part of their science topic on animals. Year 1 went to the Jersey Museum and for a walk around St Helier to learn more about their termly topics.

As a Finale, what a wonderful whole school day out we had at the end of term! The girls waved their flags on the little train and had a really good time. Millbrook Park was buzzing with activity as the girls were put into teams and tried to win prizes in the Scavenger Hunts. The weather was glorious and so the girls enjoyed the cool of the paddling pool and the ice-creams at the end.

We have renovated two of the classrooms during the summer holidays to include the installation of an interactive whiteboard in Form IV. We have also recently bought new reading and reference books for all of the classrooms. New atlases have been purchased for Key Stage 2 and the girls have enjoyed using these in their Geography, History, RE and Science lessons. We have also bought new dictionaries for Form IV, many new class readers and a wide variety of Maths resources and equipment.
